Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of joint inflammation (chronic inflammatory arthritis) that primarily affects the spine.
It usually starts in your lower back, typically where the spine joins the pelvis. Over time, the back movement gradually becomes limited as the bones of the spine (vertebrae) fuse together, and this progressive bony fusion is called ankylosis. It can spread up to your neck or damage joints in other parts of your body.
The exact cause of ankylosing spondylitis is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Men and women are equally affected; however, women are more likely than men to experience inflammation.
Signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis often appear gradually. Initial symptoms start with chronic dull pain in the lower back combined with the stiffness of the lower back. A very common symptom is pain and stiffness in the lower back that awakens them in the early morning hours from sleep.
