The medical term for nosebleeds is epistaxes. This is a very common problem all around the world. Our inner nose is full of tiny blood vessels and it is one of the most sensitive parts of our bodies. When these blood vessels get disturbed, then our blood starts to flow from the nostril or in some cases it can flow from both nostrils. This bleeding can be light or heavy. It can last from a few seconds to more than ten minutes. There are some cases when symptoms such as fainting, confusion, weakness and dizziness can accompany a nosebleed. Every single person can get nosebleed but they are most common among children ages two through ten and adult ages fifty through eighty . There are many different causes for nosebleeds. Also there are other causes for nosebleeds such as taking large doses of aspirin, excessive smoking, alcohol abuse, hard scratching or picking the nose, high altitudes, excessive heat, repeated sneezing, an injury to the nose, allergic reactions, exposure to chemical irritants and frequent nose blowing. Cancer, blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, upper respiratory infections, hormonal changes during pregnancy and nutritional deficiencies can also lead to nosebleeds. Nosebleeds are frightening but not a serious problem. In the most cases people can handle with this problem easily with the help of some simple home remedies.
Home remedies for nosebleeds
Saline water: One of the most common causes of nosebleeds is the dryness inside the nasal membranes during the winter season. To solve this problem, you should soothe and moisturize irritated nasal membranes with saline water [2,3]. You should add a pinch of salt to ½ cup of water and you should stir it well. You should put a few drops of this home remedy into your nose to moisten the inner lining of your nasal passages. Also you can use a few drops of saline nasal spray which you can buy in the markets. You should follow some of the mentioned natural cures two or three times per day during the winter in cold and dry climates.
Onion: This natural cure is a good clotting agent which is highly effective in stopping the nose bleeding. Onion has natural fumes which can help clot the blood . You should cut one onion into thick slices. You should press one slice under your nose and then you should inhale the fumes. You will notice that the bleeding will stop within minutes. You will notice that your bleeding will soon stop. If you are prone to nosebleeds during the dry months, then you should drink one to two cups of nettle tea per day.
Cold compress: A cold compress is also a very effective natural treatment which can stop your bleeding nose. The cold temperature will cause the blood vessels to constrict faster and it can slow down the blood flow. This natural cure will stop the bleeding within a few minutes. You should wrap a few ice cubes in a thin towel. You should sit up in upright position and you should tilt your head back. You should apply the ice pack across the bridge of your nose for five to ten minutes. You should repeat this natural treatment if it is needed. You should never apply the ice directly on your nose.
Pinch the nose: The time – honored pinch cure is the easiest way to stop the nosebleed. When you pinch your nose, then this is sending pressure to the bleeding point in your nasal septum which will help you to stop the blood flow in very quick way. You should sit up straight with your head titled slightly forward. You should use your thumb and index finger and pinch the soft part of your nose below the bony bridge. You should do this natural treatment for five to ten minutes. During this time, you should breathe through your nose. You should release the pressure gently and you should sit quietly for five minutes. You should repeat this natural treatment as many times as needed until the bleeding stops. You should not lay flat, tilt your head back or put your head between your legs. Also you should not blow your nose.
Steam: This is one of the best natural treatments for nosebleeds and it is very effective if someone suffers from chronic nose bleeds which are caused by low humidity levels. You should boil 1 liter of water in a large sized bowl. You should bring your face above the boiling water to take in the steam. You should cover your head with a large towel in the manner of a tent because in this way the steam will not escape from the sides. You should draw in the steam for five to ten minutes by breathing gently. You should be careful not to lean too much towards the boiling water.
