The scientific name of false black pepper is Embelia ribes. It is a large woody and tropical forest scandent shrub which has slender branches and glanddotted leaves. It is native to India, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Its stems are whitish – gray. The roots of false black pepper are brownish – gray with hairy reddish roots. The fruits of false black pepper are small, smooth and succulent which encompasses reddish seeds that run slightly black.

The false black pepper is considered to be laxative, digestive and carminative agent. It has contraceptive effect so people who are dealing with infertility or who want to conceive should avoid the usage of false black pepper. Also, pregnant women should talk with their doctors before they use the false black pepper in their diets.
