People who live in cold and humid climates know mostly about chilblains. This is a medical condition which is happening due to the sudden warming of the skin after exposure to cold temperatures. The sudden change in the temperature causes the blood vessels to quickly expand, which leads to leakage of blood into the nearby tissues. It is a known fact that the chilblains can affect many different body parts, such as the nose, earlobes, ears, fingers, hands, toes, and feet.
The most common symptoms of chilblains are dryness, inflammation, swelling, pain, redness on the affected area, intense itching, and burning sensation. In severe cases, blisters can happen on the affected area, and ulceration and infection can also set in. It is a known fact that the chilblains can affect people of all ages, but it is more common in children and elderly people. Also, it is more common in women than men.
There are some factors which can increase your risk of chilblains, such as excessive smoking, low body weight, a poor diet, a family history of chilblains, and poor circulation. In most cases, this condition goes on its own for a period of one to three weeks when further exposure to cold is avoided.
