This is life – long systemic autoimmune disease which is causing the white blood cells to mistakenly attack healthy cells and tissues. The white blood cells are focused on attacking germs to protect the infections. But when someone has Sjogren’s syndrome the white blood cells focus on destroying moisture – producing glands in the eyes and mouth. As Sjogren’s syndrome progresses, it can attack other parts of our bodies, such as liver, thyroid, lungs, kidneys, nerves, joints and soft tissue. There are two types of Sjogren’s syndrome – primary and secondary. The primary Sjogren’s syndrome happens alone. The secondary Sjogren’s syndrome happens alongside another autoimmune disease, such as lupus, scleroderma, Hashimoto’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The Sjogren’s syndrome is not curable but it has many treatments which can help to minimize the symptoms of this disease.
